We grow herbs in the basement!

It's a month away from planting time here in the Frozen Tundra, but we're determined to have a proper garden this year. The money for those bell peppers doesn't grow on trees, kids. So we carefully plant tiny seeds in tiny trays. The DNB sets up a grow light in the basement, and soon tiny basil plants are sprouting and I'm totally excited because it's the first thing I've ever planted that has actually GROWN.

Until the wireless internet technician stops by.

He asks to see our basement router setup, and the DNB leads him down the steps. Down the steps past the rifle-like pellet gun from the DNB's youth. Down the steps past the grow light and trays of seeds.

It's one of those moments when you wonder whether it's even worth broaching the subject.

"That's not weed, by the way." Then it's all awkward and the tech guy has to act like he believes you, "Oh, yeah, ha ha" and you're all, "No really" and then you pick up one of the trays and hold it out and say, "It's just some broccoli, man."

And then you realize that broccoli is slang for marijuana.
